We’re very proud of all that’s been achieved by the foundation in these first few months in honour of Steve Farrelly. A group of Steve’s friends formed the new trust, with vital backing from Sir Ted Manson and to date we’ve supported growth in literacy by helping fund an ECE teacher and purchasing teaching resources not covered by MOE. We’ve helped reduce truancy through sourcing bras for senior girls, sourcing knickers and shorts for juniors, discussing living life with your period, rewarding kids going the extra mile, and much more. Where teachers have identified a problem we have jumped in to help, providing quick and effective solutions.
But we’ve also learned how big the life problems are for our kids who are living with violence and parental disengagement in the home, as well as the ongoing challenges of living in poverty. The problems are significant and they’re entrenched in this community. But we’ve now learned how we need to collaborate with Glen Innes School and we have our contractor on the ground daily to support the kids and witness the issues first hand. So now we are challenged to develop bigger and better solutions to ensure our kids have their best early start in life. If not us, then who?
